DIANTHUS flowers are mostly perennials, a few are annual or biennial. The flowers contains five petals, normally with a frilled or pinked margin. There are more than 300 species of dianthus. Do you want to know how to collect dianthus seeds then let’s discuss the process.

Dianthus seeds are extremely difficult to harvest. There are following steps you need to take:

STEP 1 

Leave a few healthy Dianthus flowers on the plants till the time they fade and die. So by this time they start to look like this:

STEP 2

Keep the spent blooms over a white paper, one at a time, squezzing each bloom slowly & gently between your fingers. The seeds, which are small, round and black in color, will fall onto the paper

Secondly, and probably most important, only about 1 in 20 dry flower heads will have seeds in them. As stated earlier these seeds are are pretty small (only about 1mm by 2mm) but can easily be seen amongst the other dry flower crap:

STEP 3

Keep your seeds in a warm, dry place out of blowing wind and direct sunlight for 2-3 days till they dry up completely.

STEP 4

Now you may Store your seeds either in a regular paper envelope or a plastic zip-lock bag and label it. Store the envelope/ Plastic bag in a cool, dry place until next season.
