It is not feasible to purchase or prepare potting soil or potting mix seasons after seasons. It is imperative to have old soil lying in your pots, which was used to grow plants earlier. Most of us just simply re-grow plants in old soil upon approaching of a new season. This is not the best practice. We just can not re-grow plants in pre-used soil. Need to treat the old soil first. Let’s discuss how to revitalize old potting soil.
Following steps should be taken in order to treat the old soil:
Discard the weeds
First of all remove the weeds, grass or other debris from the pots.
Sterilization
Need to Sterilize the soil to get rid of micro-organisms, bacteria, virus etc. Some chemicals can be used to Sterilize the soil, but if you are growing organically then have to bake the soil. We can either bake the soil in oven or can do it in more natural way and rely on sun to do that for us.
Select a spot on your roof or in garden which gets around 8-10 hours of direct sunlight. Take out the old soil from the pots and spread it evenly on the surface. In order to speed up the process of drying it up completely, just turn the soil upside down on daily basis for at-least 3-4 days (or time taken by the soil to be completely dried).
Adding Nutrients
After sterilizing the soil, it’s time to add nutrients. Add the nutrients in the following ratio:
4 part Old Soil
1 part Compost/Vermicompost
1/8 Part Neem Khali (Neem Cake Powder)
1/16 Part Chalk Powder (It is optional) – (Chalk which is used in school to write on blackboard)
Mix all the ingredients well.
Now this soil can be reused for growing plants.
